What’s your history with rugby? What made you want to join?
I grew up in France, swept up in the excitement of Top 14, Six Nations, and World Cup rugby (Go l’ASM!). I didn’t start playing until after the pandemic, when I wanted to get active and reconnect with the LGBTQ+ community. A Muddy York RFC member encouraged me to show up—and followed up when I hesitated. One practice was all it took. I was hooked.
What moves you about playing the sport / being part of the community?
I’ve been playing for nearly 3 years. I love how rugby pushes you physically and mentally. What moves me most is the community—welcoming, patient, and open to anyone, no matter your background or experience.
What’s one stereotype about rugby players - that you’ve had to personally face or otherwise - that you really hate?
That you need to be angry or aggressive to play contact sports. I play with grit and determination, not rage—and that’s more than enough.
How has rugby impacted your life?
It’s changed everything. I’m in the best shape of my life, I’ve found purpose and community, and it helped affirm my identity as non-binary. I feel more connected to myself and my body than ever before.
If you could tell your younger self one thing as the rugby player you are today, what would it be?
You’re stronger than you think. Take the leap—you’ll land on your feet.
Is there a person or moment in your rugby career that has been particularly impactful to your rugby career or to your life in general?
Scoring my first try in our local league. We often face younger, yet more experienced teams, so breaking through and scoring was proof that I belonged. It was a moment of pride and validation.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experiences playing rugby or being a part of the community?
Rugby isn’t just about brute strength—it’s diverse, vibrant, and welcoming. Find your local grassroots club and give it a shot. You won’t regret it!
